A Way of Life, not Just a Place to Live

Extending independence

Since 1965 Bethany has been
"A Way of Life, not just a Place to Live"

for hundreds of seniors. These individuals have been united into a vibrant community some even call a family.

Bethany will enable you to extend your independence, active lifestyle, and encourage community participation. You will live in a supportive environment where caring people will assist you in finding the help you need.

A culture of caring

Bethany is a national leader in senior housing with services.

Our staff consists of a wide variety of trustworthy and caring people supported by local healthcare professionals who volunteer their time. Whether the job title says social services or maintenance, we all work to enhance your life.

Bethany offers assisted and congregate services. All are coordinated and subsidized for your good including those provided by other social service agencies.

Whether you desire a hand with housework and a visit to our beautician or you need personal care and delivered meals, we are prepared to give you the support you desire.

Housing with a heart

Each Bethany site retains some distinctiveness: Phoenix in the historic district, Merrivista with grand views of the river, Carleton Home in the countryside, and Mission Towers with a design that gives most units views in two directions.

All residences are constructed with energy conservation and accessibility in mind.

Automatic doors, ramps, elevators, and wide doors make mobility easy.

Gracious common spaces, dining rooms, TV rooms, and libraries enhance good times. Hallways are bright and wide. Parking areas allow you easy access to your car.

Bethany values our environment and features wide porches, beautifully maintained lawns, mature trees, outdoor walkways, and flower gardens.

Three sites boast of spacious roof decks with wide vistas east and west through the Merrimack River valley and south to Bradford viewing church steeples and rolling hills.

Affordability for everyone

The goal of affordable housing motivates us, however, we never sacrifice quality. You may find your home at Bethany superior to anything in the past.

We have helped hundreds of seniors with special financial needs or other housing problems to find a home at Bethany. Priority is given to individuals with these kinds of need while extra measure is taken to respect their privacy and dignity. We will be your best advocates!

Many residents pay 30% of their income for rent and those who do not will find their rent well below the fair market rent for Greater Haverhill. Our staff will assist you in finding the program that best meets your needs.

You get to choose

Our activities program provides daytrips around New England including sporting events, historic sites, and the arts.

A variety of special interest groups will help you form new friendships. You might plan your annual vacation with a Bethany trip to a national park or tourist destination.

We hope you will volunteer, serve on the Resident Council, take a exercise class, meet with a small group for a game or teach others your hobby.

Not just a place to live

Our Wellness Program includes registered nurses, health clinics, fitness activities, and exercise programs. Each site has a beauty salon and library. Our housekeepers enjoy helping you keep your home comfortable for you and welcoming to your guests.

Though you can walk or take public transportation downtown, our air-conditioned Bethany bus with a lift makes scheduled trips to local shopping areas.

If you desire more help, a certified personal care aid under supervision will help make sure your personal care needs are met.

Our kitchen cooks home-style meals from a menu designed by a licensed dietician. You will find the dining room at Merrivista inviting and a source of laughter and friendship.

Bethany was the first senior housing community to contract for mental health services and scheduled spiritual services are also provided. Sarah’s Place Adult Day Health partners with us onsite in the continuum of care.

Serving is our bottom line

You may be reassured to know that Bethany is a Haverhill based, not for profit organization and receives charitable (tax deductible) contributions.

With roots in the Haverhill Union Mission, our commitment of serving goes back to 1904. In 1965 Bethany’s founder, Rev. Dr. Duane Windemiller, envisioned a new organization motivated by spiritual values. He gathered a group of clergy and laypersons that invested themselves in the work of that vision hoping only for self-satisfaction and Divine glory in return.

From the beginning the faces of the Bethany community have reflected the full diversity of our community. We welcome those of all faiths, cultures and ethnicity.

Our residences, though constructed with brick and mortar, quickly came to life with a heart and spirit that have engendered faith, hope, and love among us all.

A request for an application begins the process toward finding your new home at Bethany. You can complete the application easily and we have no application fee. A property manager will then qualify you to be placed on our waiting list.
